Hi Peet, Happy first day of summer. Hope you and the fam are well. In an effort to reach out sooner when I have small but nagging issues, here's one: Over the last few months, every time I download a file it loses the extension (.PNG, .PDF, .JPG, whatever). For example, I'll download a .PDF file from anywhere (doesn't matter the source). When I do, the original file name will download, but the extension drops off....unless I add ".PDF" back to the file name myself while I'm saving it. Otherwise it just saves sans extension. I download/upload a lot of files during the day. Unless I'm diligent, I end up with a bunch of files with no extensions, and my machine doesn't know what program to use to open them. It's simple to fix, but also maddening! Can you help me figure out what's going on? I can't pinpoint when it started to happen, but I'd say over the last 3 months or so. Thank you! I've never heard of such an issue. I have some questions about the way this presents. When this happens do the files have the generic blank document icon? For example, if it's a PDF, does it have your expected PDF icon or is it blank? [embedded image] What browser are you using? Does it happen with other browsers? Does it happen when signed into the browser under a different/guest profile? Does it happen with all extensions/Add Ons disabled? Does it happen in a Private Browsing/Incognito session? Cheers.Peet

Ok, a little more info. It happens when I download a file, then click Save As. When I get the option to rename something, the extension goes away. Example: I want to download a file from my email named "Photo12345.jpg" I click Download, then Save As to rename it. In the editable file name field that pops up, all I'll see is "Photo12345" No period after the name, no extension. If I rename it to "Potomac cows" I have to type ".jpg" after the new name to end up with "Potomac cows 2025.jpg" If I simply download and choose Save, instead of Save As, it keeps the extension. I am like 99% certain that prior to now, it would keep the extension when I clicked Save As, too. I've documented this happening when I download from my email as well websites. Am I crazy? Has the extension always gone away when I clicked Save As? Thank you.... -- Lena Viall Conservation and Communications Manager Five Valleys Land Trust 120 Hickory Street, Suite B, Missoula, MT 59801 W: [fvlt.org](https://www.fvlt.org/) D: 406.519.5195 O: 406.549.0755 --------------------------------------------------------------- From: Lena Viall <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, June 20, 2025 12:05 PM To: Artichoke Support - Peet <[email protected]> Cc: Boston Wakeham <[email protected]> Subject: Re: File extension download help (message id: 96147699) Those are excellent questions. To be honest, I don't rename and save files to specific locations when downloading from a browser. I always download to the default folder and move. Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari? If you save a file without adding the extension, what does the file look like in the finder? Does it look like the blank document below? [embedded image] If you get info on the file that you *did not* add the extension to, what does it have the extension you expect or is it just the file name? [embedded image] In your Finder Settings is "Show all filename extensions" enabled? [embedded image] Thanks.Peet

I think your questions might have fixed it! To answer your questions: Yes, the files without extensions look blank in Finder. Seems to be mostly, or wholly, Edge, not Safari or Chrome. BUT, when I looked, the "Show all file name extensions" option was NOT checked in my Finder settings. After activating it, it seems to be working again! So weird! -- Lena Viall Conservation and Communications Manager Five Valleys Land Trust 120 Hickory Street, Suite B, Missoula, MT 59801 W: [fvlt.org](https://www.fvlt.org/) D: 406.519.5195 O: 406.549.0755 --------------------------------------------------------------- From: Artichoke Support - Peet <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2025 1:31 PM To: Lena Viall <[email protected]> Cc: Boston Wakeham <[email protected]> Subject: File extension download help (message id: 96147699)

Super odd. I can cause the same behavior when saving an image from Microsoft Edge, that is not be shown the extension when saving, but the file it saves has the extension, it's just hidden ... AND the file is not a blank document, but recognized as the file type (png, jpg, gif) ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Glad the finder Setting fixes the issue. Cheers.Peet
