Hi Peet,

My computer must be continuously plugged in to stay on. It can hold a charge for a few minutes but not long. The performance still seems fine outside of this issue.

Should I get a new battery? What do you recommend?

Yes, at this point in the computer's life, a new battery is likely required. If you are comfortable with taking out a few screws and disconnecting a battery ... this generic from Amazon looks to be rated more and higher than most other generics:
