Yahoo! and Gmail Announce New Requirements to Fight Spam

Early in October, Gmail and Yahoo! announced that they would both be implementing new requirements for email delivery to stop fraudulent email:

Starting in February of 2024, Google and Yahoo! will be requiring that all commercial email for those who send more than 5,000 messages per day must be able to get a DMARC pass.

For many email senders, these new requirements won’t impact their email programs, but for others, these changes will mean they’ll need to re-examine their current email authentication and sending practices.

New Resources

The New Requirements for Email Delivery

In order to make Gmail inboxes trusted and safe spaces for recipients, Google and Yahoo! will be enforcing a handful of new requirements. Beginning in February 2024, email senders will need to have the following requirements in place in order to get email delivered at both inbox providers:

- Implement both SPF + DKIM aligned with the From domain

- Send from a domain with a DMARC policy of at least p=none

- Valid forward and reverse DNS

- One-click unsubscribe

- Low spam rate

This news from Google and Yahoo is absolutely fantastic for the email ecosystem, and I hope goes even further over time! Inconsistently applied best practices provide avenues for abuse in the ecosystem that should not be accessible. Elevating DMARC from best practice to requirement will help materially address abuse, but until the bar is elevated to require DMARC at enforcement for all senders for every type of mail, many trusted brands — and their consumers and employees — will still be open to spoofing and phishing. This news from Google and Yahoo is a great first step, and the bar is a necessary one to protect businesses and consumers alike.
