Hi Peet,

As I'm sure you figured was coming, we're downsizing our office. Way too much space and $$ for the few of us working here these days. We've given the owners notice of our impending move. They required a 1-year notice so certainly not immediate. We would, however, like to make a plan so if they are able to find a new tenant before that time, we could be ready to vacate.

We would like to hear your have ideas on where we could house our server in that event. We're trying to have our working files fully on the MS cloud by the end of next month, but we've been planning for several months now, so I'm sure you're not holding your breath.

We're looking for a range of options. I know you had mentioned migrating remaining files and backup to a NAS box so we'd like to know what ideas you have. Holler with questions.

Is the idea to not have an office at all? Would there be no business location? What's the total amount of storage you'd like to house, just what's on psrv? The video server?

Regardless, I think your answer is to migrate to a Synology-based setup sooner rather than later. since the idea would be to be able to move/relocate more easily the only option I'd really consider is the [DS1823xs+](https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/DS1823xs+) unless you foresee the need for rack-mounting.

The [DS1823xs+](https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/DS1823xs+) is the only 2023 desktop model with 4 core CPU, which will allow us to virtualize services like AD controllers and a small PAR-SysAdmin.

Compared to any any our historical solutions they are a screaming value @ ~$1850 diskless. Setting up an on/offsite would likely be your best bet.

That box looks like a good way to go. What are you thinking for drives? I was looking at 8T SAS WD but I figured you'd have a preference. I really like how reliable the drives have been in the server.

I see that box has 8 bays. RAID 10 w/ 8T drives would give us 32T. What are your thoughts? I'm trying to get a ballpark cost for the hardware and setup as well.

Thanks.

So, this is a bit of a new issue but with the XS series of NAS, Synology is only qualifying their own drives:

HAT5310 and HAT5300

Everything you'd want to know from two good sources at once: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaBLxFStbkE

Here's the compatibility list for DS1823xs+ ... https://www.synology.com/en-us/compatibility?search_by=products&model=DS1823xs%2B&category=hdds_no_ssd_trim&filter_type=3.5%22%20SATA%20HDD

Here's the compatibility list for the 1821+ (set to thrid-party) ... https://www.synology.com/en-us/compatibility?search_by=products&model=DS1821%2B&category=hdds_no_ssd_trim&display_brand=other

We've never used qualified "Dell" drives in your Dell servers. Start now? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't see a reason we need to use branded drives. I get that firmware can be updated but we've been using non-Del drives and they've worked fine without updating the firmware.

Unless you see a compelling reason ...

Not really, no. But I'd lean toward buying Enterprise drives that are supported on other models ... and/or ensuring we buy PRO versions of RED or Iron Wolf drives

These are the best(ish) prices on seagate exos 18 sata drives: https://serverpartdeals.com/collections/seagate-exos-enterprise-drives?pf_t_condition=condition%3ANew&sort=price-ascending&pf_t_interface_type=interface%3ASATA

Here's a quick look at IronWolf Pro: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=seagate%20ironwolf%20pro&sort=PRICE_LOW_TO_HIGH

And RED Pro: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=wd%20red%20pro&sts=ma

I've been using mostly EXOS, but tomato tomato mostly.

Definitely enterprise-grade drives. The EXOS 12T drives seem very reasonable.

Can you put together a quick estimate including hardware and your time to build the box and transfer data please?

Much appreciated!

Both the 12TB and 18TB on ServerPartsDeals come with a three year ServerPartsDeals warranties. The more expensive drives have a 5 year Seagate warranty. ServerPartsDeals will send an exact replacement drive if they have one on hand.

Seagate's warranty will be more comprehensive (and longer). 3yr third party or 5yr first party warranty?

I'm comfortable with the 3-year warranty.
